A customer in the oil & gas industry was seeking a supplier for their large 3 stage custom welded telescopic oil field cylinder. Pneu-Hyd Industries was contracted to manufacture the unit, working from customer supplied drawings and input from their engineering staff. The design phase was challenging as the cylinder called for the first two stages to be single acting and the third stage to be double acting. This double action would initiate cylinder retraction; once in motion the other two stages would come down with the weight of the load. Our experience and innovative approach enabled us to effectively solve the initial dilemma, designing this part to specification.

Materials used for this part met 70 - 80 KSI tensile strength criteria. Ductile iron, and C1045 steel were manipulated to exacting profiles employing turning and milling processes on advanced CNC machinery. The outer barrel was honed, and certified welding was carried out to finish the unit. Chrome plating was applied to all three cylinders and the hollow rod. Measurements for this cylinder were 9" OD and 8" ID outer barrel, with a 167.00" stroke, and 4.375" diameter hollow rod. The cylinder was inspected for quality and integrity at each station, with a full inspection performed upon completion. Turnaround time for this project was 6 to 8 weeks for production, and 2 weeks for design and approval.
